WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY RABBIT
Every summer we get tons of calls about baby cottontails, but here’s the most important thing to know:
Mom is almost always nearby!Mother rabbits only visit the nest a couple times a day (usually dawn and dusk), so it may look like the babies have been abandoned, but they usually are not.
What to do if you find a baby rabbit:
If the nest is intact and babies are uninjured:Leave them right where they are! Monitor to see if Mom is returning.
If the nest was disturbed (by a dog, mower, etc.):Rebuild it with the original grass/fur if possible and place babies back inside. Call our hotline for advice on how to keep your dog out and protect the nest.
Keep pets away from the area
Do NOT:
Feed them Give water Assume they are abandoned just because you don’t see mom
When to call for help:Injured babies
Cat/dog caught
Cold, lethargic, or covered in flies
Nest destroyed and cannot be rebuilt
